Win a framed digital print, signed by the artist, as a door prize of the free Modern Phoenix Week Expo, April 16
I am proud to say that I’m a part of this year’s Modern Phoenix Week in two fabulous ways.
First, I will be exhibiting several of my paintings in a Ralph Haver-designed residence on Central Ave. in Phoenix, as part of the upcoming Secrets of Sunnyslope home tour. The April 17 tour — which is sold out — offers a chance to see some of the Sunnyslope neighborhood’s finest midcentury and modern dwellings.
Second, I have contributed a signed, framed digital print as a door prize of the Modern Phoenix Expo, which will take place at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) on Saturday, April 16. (Please note: To be eligible to win a door prize, you must be present for that day’s 3:45 pm drawing.)
Things just fell into place
My participation in the 2011 edition of Modern Phoenix Week 2011 is something I couldn’t have planned. Things just fell into place. I owe my good fortune to the generous support of others.
Above all, Joel Porter is the reason why I’m showing at his house on Central Avenue. Joel is a genuine friend. I have been showing my paintings in his salon — Salon Joel — since last August. During my last visit, Joel mentioned how his home had become one of 12 official stops on the Modern Phoenix tour; he saw an opportunity to hang my work at his home, just for the event.
What’s on view
I will be showing four paintings, pictured below. Anything more than four, I contend, would be too much. I have no intention of turning this into the Grant Wiggins show! We’re talking about showing in a house — not a gallery. And, quite simply, I want my work to contribute to the ambience, not distract from it.
On view at the Modern Phoenix Week Home Tour, clockwise from upper left: Vertical Waveforms A, Monolithic Waves, Circles with Corners 5, and Invisible Star.
All told, tour-goers will see work that I have produced over the past two years — a pair of very recent works (the sinewave-inspired works) and two that reach back to February and August 2009.
Lots to do for free
Although the Secrets of Sunnyslope tour is sold out, there are myriad ways to check out Modern Phoenix Week for free.
Beginning Friday, April 8, the public is welcome to attend events such as slide slams, a film, and a presentation by a former Herman Miller executive.
Likewise, the free Modern Phoenix Expo on Saturday, April 16 offers a pair of workshops and several slide slams, along with a vintage modern marketplace.
Ultimately, seeing is believing, my friends. Check out modernphoenixweek.com and attend as many free events as you can. Perhaps I’ll see you at one of them!
